My health journey, and the inspiration behind Ninny’s Teas
Have you ever heard the expression, “The wheels are falling off the bus?” This is something I said regularly a decade ago.
I had been living with chronic skin rashes like eczema, plus random rashes like Pityriasis Rosea, and even undiagnosed rashes. I grew up on antibiotics, you see, because I had chronic ear infections, and soon, my gut microbiome was a mess.
My anxiety began at a young age and peaked during high school, when I was tested for heart palpitations. Meanwhile, I was only sleeping 5 hours a night due to my perfectionism as a student and dedication to competitive dance. I was also still on the antibiotics with annual sinus infections and strep throat.
But all of this was considered “normal,” and no one was the wiser.
Fast forward to my early thirties, when my son was born and when we opened the Scented Leaf Tea House. I was working full-time and running a side business with my husband (we had a perfume business for five years before that). Adding a baby to the mix pushed me into a new state: painful fatigue.
I would get body aches regularly. I was so lethargic that the idea of washing dishes or giving my son a bath was torture. And after my daughter was born a few years later, my hormones went haywire. I had my period for months straight and gained 15 pounds over the course of a month. The wheels had definitely fallen off.
So, where does tea fit into this picture? I had been drinking tea every day since the fourth grade. When we opened our tea house, my tea selection improved drastically, but I didn’t think about being intentional about the plants I was ingesting. Until Covid.
When the pandemic hit, I had decided to take matters into my own hands. Doctors had not given me any answers, only medications.
They told me my thyroid was normal. I later found out from functional medicine labs that it wasn’t.
They told me they didn’t know the cause of eczema, but after studying under a naturalpath, I realized that also wasn’t true.
They told me that gaining weight, having erratic hormones and experiencing painful fatigue was part of being 40.
The more I dove into integrative and functional medicine, plus Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine principles, the more I realized there was a HUGE part of the puzzle that was missing.
The big realization I had is that the body is constantly trying to exist in a state of equilibrium. It also knows how to heal; we just need to give it the tools to do so. Like plants.
I ran multiple functional medicine labs to find out where my body was out of balance, then brought it back into balance using herbs, nourishing plant-rich meals and other lifestyle changes.
The five pillars of health that I focused on, and that I have used since then to help other women heal, are: Detoxification, Sleep & Cellular Repair, Gut Health & Immunity, Energy & Strength, and Nervous System Regulation.
It’s these five pillars that Ninny’s teas are crafted around, incorporating herbs and teas I used and continue to use to optimize my wellness.
